Summary: (May Contain Spoiler Alerts)
Two friends, Lina and Doon, live in the town of Ember. Years ago a group of men called The Builders created the town to keep them safe from an unknown World Disaster. The Builders created a special box that was to remain locked until 200 years had passed. The people of Ember kept the box safe and handed it down from mayor to mayor. Unfortunately, the seventh mayor lost this special box. Lina and Doon live a little more than 200 years after the Builders. After 200 years the city of Ember is falling apart the storerooms are getting dangerously low on supplies and the main generator that powers all the lights is falling apart. Soon the whole town will be plunged into darkness. Lina’s little sister, Poppy, finds an mysterious box in the closet and eats the paper that is inside, prompting Lina to find out why this paper was kept in this mysterious box.
Word of Caution:
This book contains three more in the series. The prequel The Prophet of Yonwood I do not recommend. According to the research I did, it doesn't have the right Christian theology, is slow to read, and only connects to the City of Ember on the last two pages.
Positive Notes:
This book is an extraordinary adventure that keeps you engaged until the end. I have recommended this book to many people, and they have all loved it. It's a captivating mystery book that some have read in one sitting. It is a great kids' science-fiction that is a must-read.
Who:
A great book for both boys and girls aged 9-13.
Books:
Do not forget to check out the sequels, The People of Sparks and The Diamond of Darkhold.

Hi, thanks for the question. I think that this book would be great for Tyven's first novel. It is filled with exciting adventures and so much suspense that he won't be able to put the book down. I do not think it is too scary for him but the suspense is amazing, even adults get sucked into it. The second and fourth book (I do not recommend the third book 'The Prophet of Yonwood') might be a little scary for him but the first one is a great start.
I’ve been thinking about what to hand to Tyven (9) for his first novel to read on his own. How suspenseful or scary is this book?
