Summary:
Ben Carson wasn't sure he could go anywhere. He was an African-American boy, poor, fatherless, and prejudiced. He had the lowest grades in his class and worse lacked self-confidence. Yet, his mother wouldn't let him fail, "Bennie, you can do it. Don't stop believing that for one second." (Ben Carson, 18). With his mother's support, encouragement, and strong Christian faith, Ben began to gain determination and aspirations. Today, Ben Carlson is one of the best-celebrated neurosurgeons in the world. Follow his journey from childhood into the operating room where he saves countless lives. This is an amazing true story of a surgeon who believed and gave children a second chance at life.
Word of Caution:
This book explains some surgeries in detail, so if you are squeamish, don't read.
Positive Notes:
This is one of the best memoirs I have ever read. It is an amazing, extraordinary true story following the life of Ben Carson, the surgeon who successfully separated two Siamese twins conjoined at the back of the head. It is clear that Carson's faith in Christ led to his success and many medical miracles. Whether you are interested in neurosurgery or not this book is a must-read for everyone. Please read if you think your dreams are too big, are discouraged in life, or you'll never make it. Ben Carlson used to think so too and look where he is now.
Who:
Great for grades 10, 11, 12, and beyond.
